California Senate Bill 707 (Wolk), a bill that would disarm law-abiding carry licensees (“CCW” holders) in “gun-free school zones” and criminalize currently-lawful conduct, squeaked through the Senate on a 23-12 vote. Five senators did not vote on the measure.

Previously, the bill passed out of the Senate Committee on Appropriations on a 7-0 vote. However, Senators Bates and Nielsen — the only two Republican members of the Appropriations Committee — switched their vote to “nay” on the floor following a massive public outcry.

SB 707 now heads to the Assembly, where it will likely be referred to and heard by the Public Safety Committee. According to the Legislature’s rules, the bill must be passed by the policy committee before the Legislature adjourns for Summer Recess in order for it to move forward.
