The Chicago Police Department says the number of homicides in the city during January climbed to 51, making it the bloodiest start to a year in at least 16 years. In fact, 22 more homicides occurred last month than in January 2015 – and the number of shooting incidents during the same period more than doubled to 242.

Erich Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, calls the numbers out of the Windy City "really not surprising." He says Chicago's gun laws are leaving law-abiding citizens defenseless.

"Chicago has some of the strictest gun-control laws in the country," he says, emphasizing what's been common knowledge for years. "We're seeing over and over again that all the restrictions in the world don't make people safer. Bad guys are still able to get firearms."

According to Pratt, the world has seen the consequences when entire countries – like France – adopt "draconian" gun restrictions.

"Last year ... more people were killed in mass shootings in France than in all the years here in America under Obama's presidency," he summarizes. "So in one year, they have eclipsed the entire Obama presidency.
