The campaign of Gov. Kate Brown has accepted a $250,000 contribution from New York business magnate, philanthropist and former politician Michael Bloomberg. It brings her total raised since taking office to more than $3.6 million.

Bloomberg’s donation, which is Brown’s largest single contribution ever, comes on the heels of the governor’s announcement in July that she plans to pursue a package of legislation combating gun violence in Oregon.

Bloomberg is co-chair of a gun control advocacy group called Everytown for Gun Safety. Earlier this year he donated $250,000 to Rep. Val Hoyle, D-Eugene, who ran unsuccessfully for Secretary of State, and gave $250,000 in 2014 to John Kitzhaber’s campaign. The sixth-richest man in the world according to Forbes, Bloomberg has donated more than $2.6 million to Oregon political campaigns over the years.

Among Brown’s gun control proposals, which are grouped under the name “Oregonians United to End Gun Violence,” is a plan to keep guns from domestic abusers; cut down on illegal gun sales; and close a so-called loophole that allows would-be gun buyers to obtain a gun without a background check.

Similar legislation intended to close the loophole narrowly passed through the state House of Representatives this year, but stalled in the Senate without receiving a vote.

Brown is running for election to finish the term Kitzhaber vacated when he resigned in 2015. Her Republican challenger is Dr. Bud Pierce, a Salem cancer doctor seeking public office for the first time.

Donations to political campaigns are often spent on television, radio and digital advertising or print leaflets mailed to voters around the state.

Brown’s gubernatorial campaign has nearly $2 million in cash on hand after Bloomberg’s donation. Though it hasn’t bought any advertising yet, it’s likely that it will soon with the election nearing. Brown successfully ran for Secretary of State in 2008 and 2012, and spent more than $1 million on advertising during those campaigns.

Meanwhile, Pierce, the Republican governor candidate, has spent $624,000 on ads for his campaign.
