The Oregon Supreme Court proved Wednesday that when it comes to firearms, definitions actually DO matter! The court ruled in favor of a lawsuit that challenged Initiative Petition 43 on the grounds that it was overbroad in applying the term “assault weapon” to common firearms.

Proposed by U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, she argues that work is already underway in a number of states to store personal information on gun owners and some of it may be supported by grant money from Washington.

The weapons of choice were almost entirely handguns so there was no chance to rail against “assault rifles.” (One suspect did have an extended magazine capable of holding more rounds than state law allows.)
