The bill, killed Tuesday, would have reduced fines imposed on gun owners carrying without a permit in the state.

The proposal — Senate Bill 339, sponsored by Republican Sen. Frank Nicely — failed in the Senate Judiciary Committee when a first motion to hear the measure was not followed up by a second, the Associated Press reported.

Under current Tennessee law, gun owners caught carrying firearms without a permit can be fined up to $500 and could also face possible jail time.

The measure would have reduced the fine to $100 for a first offense and up to $250 for a second offense and would not have included jail time as punishment. The bill also specified that individuals would be cited and note arrested for first and second offenses.
