WASHINGTON, DC (March 2, 2018) — Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) has announced its strong support of H.R.5112, an important new bill introduced by Congressman Thomas Massie (R - Kentucky). The SAFER Voter Act would allow law-abiding, legal adults under the age of 21 to purchase handguns from licensed firearm dealers.

In a 4-page letter voicing strong support, FPC President Brandon Combs expressed to Rep. Massie that H.R.5112 was a common-sense measure to “remedy a glaring, inequitable, and unconstitutional defect in federal law that denies a fundamental, individual right to law-abiding, legal adults who have reached the age of majority.

The letter went on to say that the law at issue, 18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(1), makes exercising fundamental, individual Second Amendment rights a federal crime. “H.R.5112 must be passed to jettison the constitutional infirmity at issue here,” the letter said.

“To be sure, this terminally-defective statute is a continuing injustice perpetrated against the People by the government, enforced on pain of criminal liability, or even fine and imprisonment,” wrote Combs, characterizing the statute H.R.5112 would repeal as an “offense to the Constitution itself.”

“Any adult considered to be old enough to vote and old enough to die in defense of our country should be afforded all of the protections guaranteed by our constitution,” Congressman Massie told FPC. The advocacy group agrees.

“Congressman Massie’s H.R.5112 is an excellent bill that we are proud to support,” Combs said about The SAFER Voter Act. “Eliminating unconstitutional and discriminatory age-based laws that prevent legal, law-abiding adults from exercising their fundamental, individual rights is an important part of restoring the Second Amendment to its rightful place. We thank Congressman Massie for his leadership on this important issue.”
