SACRAMENTO – Paternalistic Bay Area Democrats have introduced yet another bill to expand California’s so-called “assault weapons” laws and target innocent Californians with harsh criminal penalties.

Assembly Bill 1664, authored by Assemblymembers Marc Levine and Phil Ting, “would define ‘detachable magazine’ to mean an ammunition feeding device that can be removed readily from the firearm without disassembly of the firearm action, including….with the use of a tool.”

In practice, Levine’s proposal would include all semi-automatic firearms that employ a “Bullet Button” or some other magazine-locking device.

“As usual, ignorant California legislators jump on the gun ban bandwagon without having a clue how firearms actually work,” said Brandon Combs, President of Firearms Policy Coalition. “These politicians should spend more time at the range and a lot less time writing laws like AB 1664 that attack our civil rights.”

AB 1664 follows another gun control bill, AB 1663, announced yesterday by Assemblyman David Chiu and California Attorney General Kamala Harris.

Noted Combs, “Semi-automatic firearms of the types AB 1664 seeks to regulate are used in so few crimes that they barely register on crime statistics. AB 1664 is not a public safety bill, it’s a public control bill.”

“Firearms Policy Coalition and our members will fiercely oppose AB 1664 throughout the legislative process,” concluded Combs. “We’re going to defend the people’s fundamental, individual Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms at all costs.”
