SACRAMENTO – Two more Democrats in the California Assembly jumped into the gun control debate yesterday, each introducing a new bill to expand the Golden State’s already byzantine firearm regulations.

Assembly Bill 1673, authored by Assemblyman Mike Gipson (D – Carson), would expand the definition of “firearm” to include “an unfinished frame or receiver of a weapon.”

Notably, the measure’s vague language could be interpreted to apply to simple pieces of sheet metal since many firearms are based on common items that could be “readily converted to the functional condition of a finished frame or receiver.”

Another gun control bill, Assembly Bill 1674 authored by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D – Los Angeles), would make all firearms subject to an existing criminal law that limits the ability of law-abiding Californians to purchase more than one handgun at a time.

Santiago’s AB 1674 would make it a crime for someone to attempt to purchase more than one firearm of any type in any 30-day period. The measure would also delete the private party transaction exemption to the 30-day prohibition, making it illegal for gun buyers to purchase more than 12 new or used firearms in a year.

AB 1674 is supported by well-funded gun control groups like California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

“Extremist California Democrats will not be satisfied until every law-abiding gun owner is either in jail or disarmed,” said Brandon Combs, president of Firearms Policy Coalition.

Explained Combs, “Gun control laws like AB 1673 and AB 1674 are designed to gut the Second Amendment by making it virtually impossible to exercise our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms without a law degree or a badge. That wouldn’t fly for voting rights, free speech, or abortion and it won’t fly here.”

“Gipson and Santiago just picked a fight with the wrong people,” concluded Combs. “Firearms Policy Coalition is committed to fighting these outrageous bills and defending the civil rights of law-abiding people from their statist big government agenda.”
