Former state Sen. Ron Calderon has agreed to plead guilty to one count of mail fraud in the wide-ranging corruption case brought by federal prosecutors.

In exchange, the U.S. attorney will seek no more than a five-year, 10-month prison sentence for the 58-year-old Montebello Democrat, according to an agreement filed Monday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Mail fraud constitutes a knowing scheme to “defraud the public of its right to the honest services of a public official through bribery or kickbacks” that is carried out through in part through use of the mail.

Under the agreement, Calderon admits to several instances of taking payments in exchange for official acts, including a job offer for his daughter from an undercover agent posing as a film studio executive in exchange for Calderon’s vote to lower the threshold for California’s film tax credit.
