Firearms Policy Coalition Urges Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to Sign Bill Eliminating Mandatory Handgun Waiting Period
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 11, 2015
On behalf of its members and supporters, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) has sent a letter urging Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to sign pro-gun Senate Bill 35.
The measure, which was passed by the state Assembly on Tuesday, would eliminate the mandatory handgun waiting period and allow a firearms dealer to immediately transfer a handgun to a purchaser following a successful Department of Justice background check.
“By signing SB 35 into law, Governor Walker would help bring Wisconsin’s background check and waiting period regulations into conformance with the Second Amendment’s constitutional standards,” said FPC President Brandon Combs.
As explained in FPC’s letter to Walker, SB 35 is consistent with an August 2014 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Anthony Ishii in the case of Silvester v. Harris, which held that California’s mandatory firearm waiting period laws violate the Second Amendment rights of gun owners and carry licensees who pass a background check.
“Senate Bill 35 would make sure that hard-working Wisconsin taxpayers don’t need to shoulder the heavy financial burden of expensive Second Amendment litigation on the existing waiting period laws,” Combs noted.
“We wish to thank Senator Wanggaard and all of the bill’s coauthors and cosponsors for their leadership and hard work getting this commonsense measure passed. I’m looking forward to seeing the people of Wisconsin more freely able to exercise their rights once SB 35 is signed into law.”
