Bill/Issue: NY SB 827 - Bans Some Non-Violent Offenders from Possessing Firearms

  • Position: Opposed
  • Author: Sen. Boyle (R-4)

Summary: SB 827 would make it a class E felony for any person who has been held in contempt of court or for third degree criminal trespass to be prevented from ever owning a firearm. On their own, violation of either of these crimes carries with it no more than 1 year in jail and up to $1,000 in jail. Meaning that SB 825 would restrict the rights of a convicted person FOR LIFE for a non-violent crime that the state has deemed you atoned for after one single year.
