A New Jersey Republican who supported two earlier efforts to weaken federal restrictions on gun ownership, will vote against legislation that would make it easier for shooters to buy silencers.

Rep. Chris Smith, R-4th Dist., made public his opposition the Sportsmen's Heritage And Recreational Enhancement Act after the nation's worst mass shooting Sunday night in Las Vegas.

The measure would make it easier to for gun owners to buy silencers, would eliminate their $200 registration fee and an extensive background check, and would prevent the government from reclassifying certain ammunition as armor-piercing bullets. 

"I have been asked anew by some about my position on the Share Act," he said Monday. "Because the current regulations governing the purchasing of silencers are designed to protect Americans and do not threaten Americans' fundamental Second Amendment rights, I advised the Republican leadership several days ago that I will be voting no."
