New Orleans homeowner defends daughter, shoots burglar

Andy Cunningham for WDSU News reports:

A suspect was shot Wednesday during a burglary at a home in New Orleans East, police say.

The New Orleans Police Department responded to a call of a shooting about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 6700 block of Dorian Street.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 18-year-old Imani Smith lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Witnesses told officers that Smith was involved in a home burglary nearby Foche Street.

When officers went to the 6700 block of Foche Street, they found a homeowner who told police that he had received a phone call from his daughter, who said three suspects broke into their home.

Fearing for her life, police said, she barricaded herself into a room, locked the door and called her father.

Her father told police he arrived at the home, armed with a gun and chased the burglars into the backyard.

“While in the backyard, he said he believed Smith was trying to pull a gun out on him and the homeowner said that’s when he fired multiple shots at Smith. One of the shots hit Smith in the thigh,” police said in a news release.
