Let’s be clear: anti-gun extremists *hate you* (Gawker: “Here Is a List of All the [Assholes] Handsome Law-Abiding Citizens Who Own Guns in New York City”)

Let’s be clear here: people like Gawker editor John Cook (Twitter: @johnjcook, email: [email protected]) and New York mayor Michael Bloomberg don’t want “reasonable” anything. They flat-out hate you. Not ‘hate you’ like a shunned thirteen-year-old in a lunchroom breakup, but ‘hate you’ as in willing to put your life – and those of your loved ones – at risk.

As if the New York newspaper The News Journal publishing a map of gun owners didn’t go far enough, Gawker’s Cook has posted a full, searchable list of New York gun owners, complete with the type of license they have.

Recently, FPC managing director Brandon Combs said about The News Journal debacle, “The News Journal has made a decision to open up thousands of innocent people to harassment and discrimination in their private and professional lives… They put the lives of those people and their families at risk by very effectively telling violent criminals where to steal guns.  Their blatant disregard for the lives of these gun owners and the people in their community shows how irresponsible they are.  It’s disgraceful.  Everyone on both sides of the gun rights discussion should be livid about this.”

Those same sentiments apply here.

Here’s one Gawker article commenter that explains why publishing lists of gun owners is both an outrageous breach of privacy and downright criminal:

“The journal posted my address and name for my gun ownership. My past stalker saw this. I haven’t heard from him in two years, because I disappeared. Now he is back and calling me……thanks to people like you bunch of assholes, looks like I will have to protect myself from becoming a murder victim. Gracias.”

Here’s how the Gawker piece begins:

Last month, the Journal News sparked a firestorm of protest when it published a mappable database of every licensed gun owner in Westchester and Rockland counties, north of New York City. The paper obtained the data—which New York state law explicitly and unambiguously demands be made public—through open records requests. The reaction was swift and furious—gun rights and privacy advocates published the names and addresses of the paper’s editors in retaliation, and the paper (ironically) hired armed guards to protect against threats.

One weird reaction came from TV wraith Ann Coulter, who told Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week: “If we’re producing lists of gun permit owners, I want them for Manhattan. I want to know how many rich liberals with their body guards have gun permits.” You’re in luck, Ann. I happened to have just such a list in my filing cabinet. Here it is.

Below is a 446-page list of every licensed gun owner in New York City.
